The feats of Prof. Dr. Engr. Atta Ullah Shah

One of the astute vice chancellors Karakoram International University has amassed.

A period of 3.5 years is no contrary an accomplishment to anyone who anticipates how hard it is to begin, let alone, uphold a university against a backdrop of almost insurmountable economic hardships. team The Karakoram put an effort to take time to praise the Vice Chancellor of Karakoram International University, Gilgit,  on having play his part for the young but highly dynamic institution to clock twenty years of life.

Being a core researcher and teacher Dr. Attaullah Shah has endeavoured to establish a lineage of Research and quality pedagogy at the Karakoram International University.

  1. Strengthening of Research Culture

Universities around the globe are known by how they undertake research and disposition. If we rescind research from Universities, they could be curtailed to merely some community Colleges.  Research may be factual research focused on existing realistic phenomena or applied research to induce efficiency and execution in several undertakings and procedures. Upholding of Research Culture at the KIU, Prof. Dr. Shah steered some of the leading attainments, such as, Time-honoured KIU Graduate School where MS programs are commenced in 16 distinct programs under the below mentioned faculties, Natural Sciences, Life Sciences, Social Sciences etc. Today more than 400 students are enrolled in the Karakoram Graduate School. This has expanded involvement of faculty in research at one hand and benefited numerous stakeholders on the other hand. Installation of Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) is just another feather in his hat. This office primarily focuses on tailoring research to regional and national shortages, adjoining with public and private institutions for joint research and commercialized study premia to new commodities and liturgies. The consultancy services under ORIC, is actively committed with Gilgit Baltistan Government Planning & Development, GBDMA, UNDP, ICIMOD, WWF, GBRSP, SCO, Rupani Foundation, Punjab IT Board and many more collaborators for mutual research and ventures. ORIC has been vigorously involved with UNDP in embarking research surveys under GLOF-2 projects in 17 valleys of Gilgit-Baltistan. Besides, protocols for Public Private Partnerships are being endorsed to instigate various projects. A Business Incubation Centre has been consolidated as well.

The elementary research publication of KIU, labelled as ‘Journal of Mountain Areas Research’ has also been approved by HEC under category Y. To nurture a research intuition in the students, Research Colloquiums, Seminars and workshops are frequently held at the KGS. All the graduate students are made to submit their research propositions in Synopses Workshops. Students are exhorted to author quality research manuscripts in distinguished journals. Great emphasis is extended over combing research projects from various patrons such as HEC, PSF, DAAD, World Bank funding, British Council funding, US Aid Funding and many further. The personnel is being acquainted for jotting down research budget recommendations to hunt research funding.

Faculty has been encouraged to expand their research proposals under Faculty Research Grants. More alternatives are lent to young PhD scholars so that they can evolve in their profession.

All these endeavors for facilitating research culture at KIU has substantiated incredibly effective and an enormous amount of Faculty has penned reasonable number of quality research manuscripts in prominent journals. The faculty is also provided with honorariums and incentives on publishing quality research papers. The cumulative impact factor at individual faculty level and unified KIU level has heightened manifold as an outcome. Today a decent fraction of TTS faculty and PBS faculty are pertained to an elevated quality research across numerous domains.

  1. Expansion of Faculty of Engineering and Tech at KIU

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education is contemplated significant for scholarly growth of a society. Science gives rise to a community that adequately comprehends the voluntary phenomena, whereas Engineering and Technology develops the usage of doctrines of sciences to decipher problematic human difficulties. Mathematics facilitates in interpreting the intricate phenomena in a straightforward way to comprehend associations. Engineering and Technology schooling invariably persisted a key challenge for the youth of Gilgit-Baltistan due to inadequacy of infrastructure, lab equipment, and faculty etc. The scheme of Establishment of Faculty of Engineering and Tech FET was though ratified timely but it couldn’t get launched due to multiple practical reasons. The project remained suspended largely due to some land dispute in the region.

Dr. Shah, after taking on charge as the vice chancellor of KIU endeavoured with his battalion to untangle this situation. The assignment was picked up where they left off with extensive hard work. The program of Mining Engineering Department and Civil Engineering Tech was initiated with the approval of Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) and National Tech Council (NTC). Part of the construction zone has been finalized and taken over, where the courses are being delivered forthwith. The continuing portion will be finished off by mid-summer 2022.

With all these endeavours, today the student body at KIU main campus has been expanding from 3500 to 7200 whereas about 1500 pupils study at sub-campuses, rendering a cumulative enrollment of more than 8000. What’s a further inspiring aspect about Dr. Shah is his disposition toward his students and faculty of the institution. KIU had many notable VCs, but not many of them articulated with the students like he did. The way he hung out with the students and answered back their emails in no time explains a lot about his down to earth nature. With great authority comes great accountability and Dr. Shah has wholly perpetrated justice to his nomination. There is a lot more for us, the students of KIU to think back and be indebted to him.
