The 10th Convocation Ceremony proved a huge success and marked a proud day for Karakoram International University. Dr. Arif Alvi, President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan Khalid Khurshid Ahmad Khan, Speaker of Gilgit-Baltistan Syed Amjad Zaidi, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ataullah Shah, Secretary of Gilgit-Baltistan Capt (Retd) Mohi-Ud-Din Wani, members of the Provincial Assembly, political, social, military, judicial, and administrative officers attended. The President of Pakistan, while addressing the gathering, concluded that education is the key to building a nation. The brain drain is a cause of concern for a developing country like Pakistan. Concrete steps are to be initiated to create employment opportunities for these talented youth and use their talents in the larger interest of the country. The President congratulated the graduates on the occasion for crossing the important milestone of their academic phase and described their success as a logical result of the efforts being made to educate and train teachers and parents. Speaking on the occasion, the President further said that women should not miss any opportunity to play an equal role alongside men in different fields of life.
The graduates should be exhorted to take off the labels of gender-critical, weak, and oppressed women and learn to trust their abilities. President Arif Alvi.
According to the President and Chancellor of Karakoram International University, Pakistan, particularly Gilgit-Baltistan, is a land of great opportunities, with manpower, rich in capacity. If we do our part by putting forward a collective interest, it is not remote that the country will soon be on the path to economic self-sufficiency. If we all do our part by promoting common interests, the country will be on its way to economic self-sufficiency in no time. He congratulated the graduates and their families and congratulated the Vice-Chancellor, Faculty, and Staff of Karakoram International University for the successful convocation and the services rendered in respect of higher education and research.
Gilgit-Baltistan is a region rich in natural and mineral resources and, in the future, skilled manpower will be required to harness these resources for national development and prosperity.
Delivering the opening remarks, Vice-Chancellor Karakoram University Professor Dr. Ataullah Shah said that Karakoram International University Gilgit is working as a game-changer in accessing affordable and quality higher education and research in Baltistan. So far, more than 12,000 students have graduated from this university, who are playing a full role in the socio-economic development of the region.
The Vice-Chancellor said that Karakoram International University has ensured affordable and accessible quality higher education and research to remote areas of Gilgit-Baltistan through sub-campuses of Hunza, Ghizer, and Diamer. Recently, a committee has been formed to prepare a feasibility report for another campus in Nagar. He said that the inauguration of Karakoram Graduate School has become a successful initiative to focus on the challenges of the region and promote research-based higher education.
Addressing the graduates, the Vice-Chancellor said that the degree is proof of your ability and dedication and is a standard of real excellence in your field of choice. The Vice-Chancellor congratulated all the students on their significant success as a result of continuous hard work and commitment.
We reiterate that with our four campuses, more than 22 departments, 59 plus undergraduate programs, and a dedicated team of 20 graduate programs, intellectuals, and management, we are engaged in providing meaningful and state-of-the-art knowledge to our more than 8,000 students.
Karakoram International University has always been proud of its graduates who hold important positions in government, the armed forces, law enforcement, bureaucracy, education, and a number of other professions. The alumni list includes such names as Shaista Jabeen, the first female from Gilgit-Baltistan to clear the CSS exams, and that too, with a mind-blowing margin. SP Tahira Yusuf, the first female to hold an administrative position in Gilgit Baltistan’s police force, is also a KIU graduate. These and other individuals have demonstrated the high quality of education provided to varsity students. Karakoram International University does not only focus on theoretical knowledge but also gives due attention to practical personality development, which is why several KIU alumni have also become professional athletes.
The Vice-Chancellor of KIU is committed to upholding the principles of family intellectual pluralism, pursuing quality higher education, and engaging in
evidence-based research activities.
Keeping in view the emerging needs for internet and IT facilities, KIU and Special Communication Organization (SCO) have developed a Business Incubation Centre in KIU.
The Vice-Chancellor thanked the Chancellor for his contribution to providing a maximum number of scholarships to the backward but talented students of the KIU.
The event included the distribution of 599 degrees and 65 gold medals, as well as several silver medals among the graduates. The gold medals were distributed by the President of Pakistan, while silver medals and degrees were distributed by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Attaullah Shah. The Senior Administrative Teaching Officers of the University assisted the Vice-Chancellor in distributing degrees.
The valedictorian of the year was Maryam Mahmood, a graduate student of the Department of Biological Sciences, who expressed her gratitude for being given an opportunity to fulfill her dreams at her doorstep and her determination to play a role in the development of the region and the country.
The Registrar, KIU Abdul Hameed Lone, carried the flag of the university, Shahab Uddin Ghauri recited from the Holy Quran, and Maryam Mahmood represented the students with her speech.
