The term “psychiatric disorder” refers to a broad range of problems that disturb a person’s thoughts, feelings, behavior, or mood. According to the “World Health Organization” around, “792 million people lived with a mental health disorder of some kind, translating to 10.7% of the global population. The most prevalent were; anxiety (284 million people, 3.8% of the population), and depression (264 million people, 3.4% of the population). Subsequently, South Asian countries have a high disease burden of psychiatric disorders which is 14.2%. This is higher as compared to the worldwide-pooled prevalence of mental disorders which is 13.4%.
In Gilgit Baltistan, the theme of mental illness is highly neglected. According to the research paper of Najma Najam and Dr. Sadiq Hussain, “Gender and Mental Health in GB”, female participants reported a higher level of anxiety, depression, loss of behavior as well as emotional control as compared to males.”. In Gilgit Baltistan, less than 10% of total Psychiatry patients visit a doctor and receive proper treatment. There is this stigma attached to psychiatric disorders in terms of privacy. Gilgit Baltistan has a wide range of mental disorders due to the harsh weather and the hard geography. There is a lack of awareness and accessibility for people residing in the far-flung areas of Gilgit-Baltistan and only a limited number of people living in cities have access to mental health facilities.
These mental disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, phobias, (depression) panic disorder, drug dependency disorder like sleeping pills, benzodiazepines, opium, alcohol, and hashish, as well as a psychosexual diseases like premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction. Patients have symptoms of weakness in sexual power and need medicine. Sleep disorders include insomnia (no-sleep), hypersomnia (over-sleep), nightmares, and terror problems. During sleep due to bad dreams patients scream (Psychiatry Hospital, Jutial). There are also a lot of cases of conversion disorder. It is most common among young people, especially females. They get in a state of partial unconsciousness for 2-3 hours, people usually believe it to be a magic effect or evil crust, due to their unawareness about mental disorders. People relate it with shamanism but it’s due to a mental disorder named Convulsion disorder.
According to the report of Psychiatry hospital Gilgit-Baltistan in 2020-2021, the total number of patients in Gilgit Baltistan during this period was 1262, from which 37.48% were patients of depression. The prevalence rate for depression is between 35 to 40 percent worldwide. 10.69% of patients live with the bipolar affective disorder (BAD). The number of patients with schizophrenia was 7.52%. Patients with panic disorders prevailing in 4.8 %. All other mental disorders other than those collectively prevail 39.83%.
In the field of psychology, aforesaid mental disorders are studied within the domain of two branches which are: Neurosis and Psychosis. “Neurosis” is a minor mental disorder. Where patients have insight about an illness like people having depression, anxiety, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorders, panic disorders, etc. Where the patient understands that he needs treatment. Whereas in “Psychosis”, people have no insight and they don’t accept their illness. Such patients are very difficult to treat like patients suffering from schizophrenia, mania, and bipolar disorders.
Reasons behind the Mental Disorders
Social Causes: Financial problems, domestic violence, unequal attention in the family, business, jealousy, etc. are the social factors that make people uncomfortable and can result in mental health problems.
Biological Causes: The imbalance of neurochemicals or neurotransmitters, also known as brain juices, increase and decrease in their number and can cause different mental disorders. An increase may cause psychosis and a decrease in the level of neurotransmitters can cause neurosis.
Environmental factors: Being exposed to difficult situations such as experiencing the deaths of loved ones is a terrible experience that has long-lasting psychiatric problems.
Genetic Factors: Genetic factors also have a great influence. If there is any psychiatric disorder in parents, it may transfer to children through inheritance. There are many cases of such kind in Gilgit Baltistan.
Hence reckoned the aforesaid statistics questions arise in our mind how to control these mental disorders? The answer to this question is very simple. The basic thing for every successful project is consistency and awareness. Every person in society may play role in the control and prevention of mental disorders.
A century ago, European nations also had stigmas regarding psychiatry, but today they accept mental disorders and seek proper treatment. They accept it as an illness and quickly visit doctors. Our community influence regarding these stigmas is so intense that even medical doctors, when facing some mental disorder try to hide it from others, but they get proper treatment as they have knowledge about psychiatric illness. Many doctors are getting treatment from psychiatry hospital Gilgit for their mental problems, but their names and records are confidential.
- A positive family environment and equality among family members is very important for a healthy environment. Ignore the perceptions of community as they destroy our family environment. Every family has its own pros and cons.
- Never expose domestic violence in front of children. The family environment should be maintained on an average: not too friendly not too strict.
- Give the children equal rights and love despite their gender, IQ, age and personality.
- Avoid providing technology gadgets to children, because these things affect intellectual abilities and brain functioning in early childhood.
- Be polite and humble, try to solve issues in a civilized manner it will improve the environment. Every problem has a solution, and every illness has treatment.
- Don’t live for others, live for yourself.
